Biography
| Miniaturist of spectacular gifts, but also painted oil portraits and occasional religious and mythological subjects. Baptised at Okeford, nr. Tiverton, Devon, November 5th 1742. The artist died in London July 4th 1821. He was a youthful prodigy,he came to London in 1754, spent a few months with Hudson, and then studied at Shipley's Drawing School from which he won a series of prizes for drawing from the Society of Arts, He Entered RA Schools 1769. Many of his exhibited portraits were in oils. He started exhibiting miniatures in 1762 and soon became the smartest and one of the most elegant miniature painters England has produced. From 1785 he was Principal Painter to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales and he was much in vogue in the flashy circles of the Prince of Wales. In 1784 he presented an altarpiece, The Liberation of St. Peter, to the church at Tiverton and he produced a number of small subject pictures in a Corregiesque vein. His most remarkable portraits on the scale of life are four at Powderham Castle, dating 1791-1793. |
