Biography
| Richard Estes is an American painter of photorealism. Estes' paintings usually detailed studies of city scenes with an emphasis on geometric shapes and clean lines. At the beginning of his career, Estes worked primarily as a graphic artist in New York, painting on the side. In 1966, Estes was financially secure and devoted himself entirely to his painting. Early on, Estes' subjects comprised mainly of city dwellers engaged in daily activities. Later, Estes transitioned to painting the inanimate buildings and urban objects he is now known for. In particular, Estes was interested in glass and mirror, and their ability to reflect the scenes around them. For Estes, of primary importance in his art was faithfulness to reality. Consequently, he is considered among the founders of the international photo-realist movement begun in the 1960s, with other painters such as Ralph Goings, Chuck Close, and Duane Hanson. |
