| Irish scene painter who also practiced as a painter of ideal landscapes. Born in Dublin, son of Richard Carver died in London 1791. He was already painting scenery in Ireland in the 1750s. The artist Sent landscapes to the Dublin Society of Arts 1765-68. Garrick liked his scene painting and persuaded him to come to London 1769, where he did scenery for Drury Lane, transferring to Covent Garden 1775.He Exhibited SA 1770-80, being elected president for 1777 RA 1789-90. He signs his pictures these are mostly variations on the style of Gaspard Poussin in the same spirit as Gaspardesque pictures by Lambert. |
