Biography
| Robert Fagan was a portrait and history painter, and a resident in Italy. Born March 5th 1761, he is the only British portrait painter who deliberately adopted a Neoclassical style, likely picked up in Italy. Fagan entered RA Schools in 1781, but left England via Paris in 1783 for Rome, where he was mainly settled until turned out by the French in 1797. By 1800, he was back in Italy, and both of his wives were Italian. Fagan carried on a considerable activity excavating and dealing in old masters. He aspired to history painting, and produced some decorative grisailles with classical reliefs (1793, Attingham), but little other than portraits are now known. He exhibited RA 1793 and 1812-16, and in 1809, the artist was appointed General for Sicily and Malta. Fagan committed suicide in Rome on August 26th 1816. |
