Irwin is an American installation artist who deals with light and space. The basis of his artwork is to effect visual perception through an altered environment. I 1968-9 he produced a series of 'disk paintings' by spray painting near white colors on to gently convex circular surfaces; properly hung and lit they hover mysteriously, inflecting space and light. Subsequently, Irwin created polished prismatic plastic columns and environments reformed by screens of light, string, and scrim.
