Biography
| Portrait painter in oils and watercolours, especially of actors in character parts. Baptised London 28 July 1751; died there 19 January 1832. His family was of Dutch origin. Apprenticed to a joiner, but switched to art and entered RA Schools 1769; one would guess he had some early contact with Zoffany or Walton (qq.v.). Exh. SA 1776-78 (small portraits); RA 1778-1821; BI 1812. His theatrical portraits began in 1790 for John Bell's British Theatre and first appeared at the RA 1795. From then on he did little else, and the bulk of his work is in pencil or watercolour. The largest collection is at the Garrick Club. |
