Biography
| Shigeko Kubota was born in Niigata, Japan in 1937. She studied at the Tokyo University of Education where she recived a BFA in sculpture. She then went on to attend New york University and the New School for Social Research. In 1964, she became vice chairman of the Fluxus Organization, an intermedia organization that is involved with music, art, literature, urban planning, architecture and design. Another famous Fluxus member is the late video artist Nam June Paik, whom she married. Her body of work includes sculpture, performance and video, often in the same piece. Her most important work has been her Vagina Painting performance in which she attaches a paintbrush to her vagina and uses it to paint on a horizontal surface beneath her. She has also produced a number of works based on the life and work of Marcel Duchamp, whom she has the up most admiration for. Her husband, Nam June Paik, also had a large influence on her work when he fell ill. Kubota was compelled to create based upon her love for him and her desire to heal his illness. |
