The New York Photo League was founded in 1935 after a split from The Film and Photo League. They members of this group consisted of early pioneers in the documentary field of photography, determined to use art to effect social change. Sephen Daiter wrote in his book, This Was the Photo League, "The organization had three interrelated purposes: educationalproviding lectures, darkrooms, and classes on history, techniques, and esthetics; socialusing documentary photography to effect social change; and aestheticdeveloping and promoting photography as a fine art.
