Biography
| Sir George Chalmers was a Scottish portrait painter. Born in Edinburgh. The artist died in London November 15th 1791. About 1764 he claimed to have inherited the baronetcy of Chalmers of Cults and thereafter signed his pictures as Equs Barons. He was the son and presumably pupil of Roderick Chalmers, Ross Herald, and started as a heraldic painter and engraver. In 1739 he engraved two portraits of his own painting. He is said to have studied in Rome, but this left no impression on his style. In Minorca 1755, where he painted General Blakeney, engr. McArdell. By 1760 he had seen at least engravings after Reynolds. Practised in Edinburgh, where he married 1768 the sister of Cosmo Alexander. |
