Biography
| The most professional amateur landscape painter, and one of the great art patrons of his age. Born Dunmow, Essex, 9 November 1753; died Coleorton Hall, 7 February 1827. He succeeded as 7th Baronet 1762. Most of his work consists of watercolours and drawings {for his training in this field see Mallalieu). His rather limited exhibited work was mostly in oil, ina style based on his admiration for Claude and Richard Wilson from whom he may have had a few lessons {but see W. G. Constable, Richard Wilson, 1953, 141). His personality as an artist was not important, but as the friend and patron of artists and a patron of immense good will, though sometimes limited understanding, he was unequalled. Farington's Diary is a great source for his life and character. |
