Biography
| Sir Peter Francis Bourgeois was a landscape and history painter. He was born in London, 1756, and died there January 8, 1811. His father was a rich, Swiss emigre watchmaker. He became a pupil of de Loutherbourg c. 1774-76, and imitated the various kinds of subject matter exploited by de Loutherbourg, but his pictures are all inferior examples of his teacher's. He traveled in Europe in 1776 and had some success on his return to London, being much puffed by the dealer, Noel Desenfans, who made him his heir. He was appointed, through Desenfans, painter to the King of Poland, who knighted him, and George III allowed him (16 April 1791) to use the title in England. He established the Dulwich College Gallery with the pictures bequeathed to him by Desenfans, in which his own pictures are more than generously represented. |
