Biography
| Sonja Ferlov Mancoba trained in Copenhagen and at the Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi . In 1936 she moved to Paris, marrying the South African painter Ernest Mancoba in 1942. She lived the rest of her life in Paris, apart from the years 1947-52, when she returned to Denmark. She developed an early connection with the artists' group Linien (The Line) in 1937-9. Around this time she produced abstract drawings incorporating graffiti-like masses of calligraphic shapes (e.g. Drawing , 1939; Copenhagen, Stat. Mus. Kst) and paintings using flat areas of contrasting colour and shape. In the 1940s she formed part of the COBRA group. |
