Biography
| An American painter born in Philadelphia. He studied with Henri in 1910-13 but rejected his emphasis on subject matter. He moved toward Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and Cubism and frequently used banal source material to his imagery, such as his Lucky Strike, a prosaic representation of a cigarette packet. After living in Paris from 1928-29 his work took on the characteristics he was known for: flat forms, strong colors, words and signs in hieratic script. His work is known as wholly American near-abstract art, coexisting with the European contemporaries with a personal and transcontinental subject matter. |
