Surrealism

Art Fortune | Surrealism

Surrealism refers to a unique movement that began in France in the early 1910s, and lasted through the 1930s. Eventually extending to other areas across the globe, Surrealism had a profound influence in art and culture during the beginning of the 20th century. Directly influenced from the Symbolist and Dada movements, Surrealist artists chose to focus on the  subconscious realm of the mind and therefore painted bizarre, dreamlike images which included oddly juxtaposed figures and shapes and puzzling subject matter. Founded by André Breton, the movement was psychologically and politically motivated, drawing influences from the groundbreaking findings of Sigmund Freud and the political ideals of Karl Marx.

Notable Surrealists include Max Ernst, Joan Miró, André Masson, Salvador Dalí and Man Ray. Each of these artists contributed to the movement by incorporating signature Surrealist ideology into their work by painting mystifying images, often filled with illusionistic, bizarre and sexually suggestive themes that later inspired Abstract Expressionism.
