Biography
Susan MacDowell was born in Pennsylvania in 1851. Her interest in art was encouraged by her father, William MacDowell, an esteemed engraver and her family that modeled for her. Mac-Dowell-Eakins was a voracious reader, gifted photographer, attended the theater regularly and was an talented pianist who held informal musicales at their home. She used many of her own photos as reference material for painting. Mac-Dowell-Eakins and Eakins maintained separate studios in their household and strongly respected and supported one another's talents. Throughout their marriage, both artists had separate studios in the house. Eakins greatly respected his wife's work and once said that she knew more about color than he did. After his death in 1916, she returned energetically to painting, producing a considerable body of work during the 1920s and 1930s. Once she began painting again, she hardly left her studio, until at age eighty-six a fall left her dizzy and somewhat crippled.
