Biography
| Takashi Murakami has been a prolific figure in the contemporary Japanese art world. Influenced by anime, manga, and the otaku subculture, he has managed to create a new art movement, Superflat Art. Murakami had worked on a number of projects which not only included artwork but cartoons and product design (he produced both for Louis Vuitton). He walks in the footsteps of Andy Warhol by blurring the lines between high and low art by mixing art with branding. Murakami attended the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, after which he pursued a doctorate in Nihonga but became distracted with otaku culture instead. In 1996, he opened his studio, the "Hiropon factory" before finally registering his company Kaikai Kiki Co. which now hires over 100 people to continue to produce Murakami's many projects as well as a number of other artists. |
