Biography
| Jean Louis Andre Theodore Gericault's life and career epitomizes Romanticism. He was a classmate of Delacroix, both in the Lycee Louis-le-Grand and at the Beaux-Arts. Gericault's earliest works were sculptural drawings in the manner of Michelangelo, whose work he studied when he was in Italy. Although he did not stay long in Italy he did meet Ingres, whose drawings he admired. His style later developed into harsh portrayal of sublime subjects, and was often used to draw attention to current political events. |
