Biography
| When he was a child he liked to paint and to model. In 1914 joined the army and was imprisoned until 1918. He took an active part in the implementation of the Plan of Monumental Propaganda: together with his brother, Andreev created the Statue of Freedom and group statue of Hertzen and Ogarev (foremost Russian writers of XIX century). In 20-ies he modeled a lot of copies of Lenin's portray statues. By the end of 1920 Andreev was shaped completely as an artist. He worked hard, participated at competitions, the main heroes of him at that time were soldiers of the Red Army, workers, collective farmers, sportsmen. Sometimes he modeled more lyrical types, for example: Model, 1929; After swimming, 1935; Man figure sitting, 1933. But he mainly worked after orders. Works like 'Sportswoman' (the sculpture you can see at Elisium Gallery) are perceived now as symbols of his time. From 1934 he permanently worked with architect B.Iofan, elaborated sculpture decoration for the Palace of Congresses; created the Pavilion of USSR with the huge Statue of Worker, which was made of the stainless steel, for the New York exhibition in 1939. At the beginning of 1940 Andreev was attracted for more laconic forms of expressiveness (for example, the statue of Soldier of the Red Army, 1940 - 41, which was made for the project of monument in Perekop). His last large-format work with B.Iofan was the sculptural composition for the Baumanskaia metro station (Moscow). |
