Biography
| Vladimir Vassilievitch Lebedev studied at F. Roubeau'a workshop (1910-11) in Higher Arts School of the Academy of Arts (1912-14); at the same time, attended the School for painting, drawing and sculpture of M. Bernstein and L. Sherwood (1912-16). Taught at State Arts Workshops (1918-21). Worked with the Banner department of the Leningrad division of ROSTA (1920-22). Art director of the Children division of the State Publishing House in Leningrad (1924-33), worked for "TASS Windows" and magazines. Member of "Four Arts". People's Artist of the Russian Federation (1966), associated member of the Academy of Arts (1967). He was an excellent drawer, a leader of the Leningrad school of children illustration, a virtuoso of ink and brush. Laid basics of publishing children books in the Soviet Russia. Painter, bannerist. In his painting and graphic works, combined techniques of cubism and 'loubok', was attracted by impressionists. In 20ies he created several series of easel graphic works ('ordinaries') that were astonishing with a precise feeling of time - details of life, costumes, poses, archetypes. Created also portraits and still lives. |
