Biography
| Landscape painter long resident in Ireland. He settled in Dublin 1764 and had a job in the Ordnance Office until 1788, from which he first sent flower pieces as an hon. exh. in 1767, He won premiums for landscapes in 1772 and 1773 in Dyblin, and rapidly became a professional landscape painter and the most successful in Ireland. He exh. fitfully in London at SA 1777-91 and RA 1775-1811, occasionally giving a London address. He made a tour in N. Wales 1789/90 but his main subjects are views of gentlemen's seats and the less spectacular beauty spots of Ireland. His most prolific period was before 1800 but in 1813 he was elected President of the Irish Society of Artists and he was active in the formation of the Royal Hibernian Academy of which he became the first President in 1823, shortly before he died. His earlier rural scenes owe a good deal to Dutch example. He normally signs and dates his pictures. |
