Biography
| Portrait painter and mezzotint engraver. Born York 1 August 1757; died at Lisbon 1782. He was a protege of William Mason, who sent him to London, where he entered the RA Schools 1775 and studied under Reynolds up to 1778. Exh. RA 1776-79. He visited Ireland (1778) without much success and scraped some accomplished mezzotints after Reynolds 1779. He set out for India in 1780 but died en route. He was potentially the ablest of Reynolds' students and the closest to Reynolds in style. |
