Biography
| Also known as alternative porn star Zak "Sabbath," Zak Smith has recently come into his own in the art world as well. With shows in both the Whitney an San Francisco Museum of Art to his credit, Smith has found his niche by creating, as he once told me, "art for people who think they can't like art." His work is reminiscent of a comic book that the artist just wont stop touching his pen to till there is almost and excess of detail. He is best known for his portraits of women (usually friends of his) in everyday situations. The work is personal but the situations portrayed are universal which helps him connect to his audience. Along side his artistic interest, he is also highly involved with activist groups such as Food Not Bombs and donates the money from his porn career to them and other organizations. This is not surprising given the obvious punk and hardcore influence evident in his drawings. He currently resides in Brooklyn, New York where he continues to live his "punk" life style despite his success. |
