| A Chinese-French painter who grew up in Shanghai and attended Hangchou Art School, where he taught and had solo exhibitions in the 1940s. He moved to Paris in 1948 where he caught the attention of Henri Michaux, leading to a contract and regular exhibitions, as well as Zao providing images to Michaux's poems. Known as a brilliant technician, he was attracted to western art such as that from Paul Klee and Wols to Abstract Expressionism and Art informel. His own lyrical, sometimes epic abstract paintings of apparently random forms and colors were a result of his interest in the leading New York painters. |
